From the moment Shigeko entered the world the odds were stacked against her. When she was born a prophecy was revealed that she would be the new coming of the demon Mōryō. As a result, her mother Miroku was informed that Shigeko had died from complications after the birth.

In an attempt to get rid of her in a way that would ensure that the demon could be controlled, they dumped her off at the temple where she was shunned and mistreated not only because she was the only miko to actually be able to see spirits there, but also because those who belonged to the order of the temple found out about the rumored version of the prophecy and as a result they began to ostracize her in a similar way to the way Naruto was. In an effort to gain some meaning, she took to combat training.

When it was revealed that the prophecy had been incorrectly interpreted, those involved took a vow of silence and covered up all evidence of their activity.

Those monks who ran the temple offered exorcisms in order to raise revenue and make profit, often staging hoaxes in order to suppliment their income. When it was discovered that Shigeko could in fact expel spirits and spiritual energy, the monks of the temple believed it to be a further sign that she was the coming of Mōryō and confined her within the temple grounds.

Training in secret, by the time she was nearly twelve years old she fled the temple and set out on the road to find a better fate than to rot in a virtual prison. Eventually during her travels she stumbled into the path of Naruto and his sensei/guardian. Sensing a kindred spirit, he offered for her to come with them. Wary of the pair at first, Shigeko eventually warmed to them when was attacked by the monks of her former temple and Naruto came to her assistance. She accepted the offer to accompany them back to the capital of the Fire Country and eventually became a member of Naruto's team.

She fights with two small battle fans and a collection of two-foot long battle darts as well as a wakizashi.

While she maintains a friendly front, she’s still insecure. She hides this from most behind a wall of false confidence. While generally friendly, she quickly becomes formal around Naruto who she secretly has a crush on and admires greatly. She loves woodblock printing, sumi-e paintings, reading, her friends and her sensei. She quickly befriends Team 8, though she is somewhat wary around Hinata. She also admires the intelligence displayed by Shikamaru.

Her goal in life is to further the goals of her friends and ensure their dreams come true, as well as to finally discover the identities of her parents and make a real life for herself. Her hero is the now deceased Yondaime Hokage Minato Namikaze. Her favorite foods are melon bread, zenzai and amazake (though only on special days).
